Minimum Qualifications:

Undergradutate student in Public History, U.S. History, American Studies, Museum Studies, Natural History, or a related field, with classwork or experience with historical research and writing. Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.  Computer skills required, including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Access.  Must have valid driver’s license.  All applicants must demonstrate a general knowledge of the humanities and/or history, organizational skills, strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and the ability to work independently as well as with a variety of people.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate student in Public History, U.S. History, American Studies, Museum Studies, Natural History, or related field, with classwork or experience in historical research and writing.

To be eligible a student:

• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical program in the United States; and
• Must be a current full-time student, as defined by that school, in the semester or quarter in which he/she applies for internship; and
• Must be at least of sophomore standing by the beginning of the internship (or must have completed the first year of a vocational/technical program by the beginning of the internship); and
• Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Although any student in the United States meeting the above requirements may apply for internship, preference will be given to those students who are attending a college, university, or vocational/technical school within North Dakota and who are North Dakota residents.  The internship must be taken for academic credit. It is the student’s responsibility to contact their school or advisor to obtain academic credit within the school’s guidelines.

Successful applicants will undergo a criminal background check.  The Society may decline to offer an applicant an internship based on the results of that check.

Summary of Work:

The History Day in North Dakota intern will communicate with the project team and others as needed to clearly understand project activities and status. 

They will:

• ·         Work with the curator of education and state archivist in identifying collections in the State Archives related to the 2013 National History Day theme. 
• ·         Prioritize collections with the highest research value; process and create finding aides for the students. 
• ·         Develop a guide for students on selecting and developing a topic, based on the core of theme-related collections. 
• ·         Submit materials for posting to websites. 
• ·         Prepare a report on project outcomes.
