    The Living History Manager is responsible for the interpretation, management, and operation of the museum’s Living History Program. As a critical member of the museum’s Education Department, they help ensure innovative and effective public engagement through interpretation, public programs, and special events.

    Museum of the Rockies (MOR) seeks a full-time Living History Manager. The Living History Manager is responsible for the interpretation, operations, and management of the museum’s Living History Farm. He/she/they supervises, manages, and trains seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns. The Manager works with the museum’s Education team and administration to develop innovative and educational programs that engage the museum’s visitors and the region’s diverse heritage. The Manager must have an in-depth knowledge of interpretation, experience with living history programs, appreciation of historic preservation, and the ability to manage a budget.
    During the off season, the Living History Manager will support and/or lead seasonal public and educational programs, support other museum departments, and assist with the planning and maintenance of Living History exhibits.

    Museum of the Rockies (MOR) is one of Montana’s most visited museums. In 2021, the museum received over 226,000 general visitors and served thousands of additional visitors through school, youth, and public programs. MOR is a college-level division of Montana State University, an independent 501 c (3) organization, a Smithsonian Affiliate, an accredited AAM museum, and a repository for state and federal fossils. The interdisciplinary museum has one of the finest collections of paleontology in the world and a significant cultural collection from the Northern Rocky Mountain region. Located on a 22-acre museum site, it includes a 120,000-square-foot-facility, the state-of-the-art Taylor Planetarium, the 220 seat Hager Auditorium, Martin Children’s Discovery Center, and Living History Farm, along with an off-site 553-acre paleontology preserve.

    MOR is located in Bozeman, MT, one of the country’s fastest growing and prosperous communities. Nestled into the Rocky Mountains, the community offers bountiful outdoor recreation activities along with a vibrant culture of good food, art, and music.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Be responsible for the interpretation, management, and operations of the museum’s Living History Program and special events.
    • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate seasonal Living History staff, including: interpreters, volunteers, and interns and be prepared to fill in as needed in interpretive areas.
    • Manage and track Living History Program budgets.
    • Assess Living History programs including program evaluation, financial feasibility, and sustainability of programs.
    • Oversee and schedule repairs while prioritizing historical accuracy and preservation.
    • In collaboration with the museum’s Development Department, participate in occasional fundraising, including grant writing, events, and other support as required.
    • In collaboration with cultural history collections staff, help source, maintain, track, and safeguard the Living History collections.
    • Help ensure that the museum continues to strive for diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion with its programs, staff, and public interactions.
    • Flexibility to assume duties as assigned related to educational, public programs, and exhibit support.
    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    1. Bachelor’s degree in History, American Studies, Education, Anthropology, or equivalent.
    2. Minimum of three years of experience with outdoor history and museum education.
    3. Demonstrated interpretive experience and skills (such as first-person, third person, and museum theater).
    4. Demonstrated experience creating and implementing programs in an informal setting for a broad range of visitors.
    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    1. Master’s degree in American History, American Studies, Museum Studies, or Education.
    2. Demonstrated experience managing a living history site and developing innovative programs with an eye towards inclusive and entrepreneurial activities.
    3. Demonstrated experience with managing and training seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns.
    4. Appreciation of historic preservation and the ability to help maintain and plan maintenance and restoration work that follows the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
    5. Demonstrated experience or interest in museum theater, traditional folk music, and historic trades.
