    Description

    The Museum Resources Division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs seeks a skilled and talented Exhibition Designer to join their Creative Services team. This position will collaborate with staff and contractors to create dynamic public exhibitions at several divisions of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs including: New Mexico Museum of Art, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the Museum of International Folk Art, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

    Primary Job Responsibilities

    • Work alongside curators and content specialists to translate conceptual ideas into compelling and effective exhibitions.
    • Create preliminary sketches, computer renderings, design presentations and construction drawings at various stages in the design development of exhibitions.
    • Coordinate the work of multidisciplinary teams through the design, fabrication, and installation of exhibitions.
    • Maintain aspects of exhibition budgets and schedules and provide oversight for outside contractors.

    Requirements

    • Degree in Design, Architecture, Applied Arts, Fine Arts, Graphic Design or related field plus two (2) years of experience in designing and installing museum exhibitions, including drafting, planning, budget and project management. Any combination of education and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four years may substitute for the required education experience.
    • Facility with applicable software including Sketchup, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Cloud or similar.
    • Understanding of museum practices, accessibility requirements, interpretive standards and familiarity with materials and techniques used in museum displays.
    • Ability to address complex problems and find creative solutions, both working alone and as part of a team.
    • Must possess and maintain a current and valid Driver’s License and obtain and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate.

    Working Conditions

    iMac computer workstation used daily. Sitting, standing, phone use in office. Regular help with installations in galleries. Must be able to life up to 70 lbs.

    Salary

    Due to the available budget allocated for this position, the hiring rate will not exceed $18.95 per hour.
