    Description

    The Curator of Exhibits - Preparator is responsible for artifact mount-making and curating exhibits at the Wyoming State Museum. They also assist in coordinating exhibit-related projects and other activities that further the museum’s mission.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

    • Collaborate with the museum team in curating exhibits, which can include, but are not limited to, interpretation, interactives, artifact mounting, design, lighting, and ADA standards.
    • Construct museum displays and exhibits, mounts, artifact storage, or any other additional museum needs. 
    • Assist in installing exhibits, including but not limited to construction, furniture, artifacts, or other exhibit needs. 
    • Assist with general maintenance of museum exhibits, including furniture, artifacts, interactives, and other components. 
    • Operate and maintain museum workshops and equipment, ensuring that spaces are clean and safe. 
    • Maintain proper inventory of exhibit tools and supplies, order supplies and equipment as needed.
    • Perform additional duties within the State Museum and Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources when needed.


    PREFERENCES: 

    Preference may be given to applicants with three or more years of experience in museum studies, art, design, or related field.


    KNOWLEDGE:

    Knowledge of proper artifact care and handling

    Knowledge of Wyoming and Western history and art

    Knowledge and abilities in a wide range of fabrication techniques

    Knowledge and experience with fabrication in metal, wood, and plastic

    Knowledge of exhibit design and construction techniques

    Knowledge of museum philosophy, best practices, and ethics

    Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, AutoCAD, etc.


    PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Must be able to lift 75 lbs.

    This position primarily works on-site in the museum shop and galleries. Remote work is allowed as duties permit.
